January 2 La Frontera to Houston
After crossing the international bridge to Presidio, we decided to make the long drive back to Houston without rest. It seemed pointless to look for a motel at 4:00am and the rush of energy sold to us by the many churro and pan dolce vendors along the bus route was taking effect. With the familiar beat of Beau Jacque, Boozoo Chavis, Nathan Williams and Keith Frank, we drove home toward the dawn. All roads totaled, we returned to Houston in record time, just under 24 hours from the minute we left Copper Canyon. We returned to little fanfare, certainly not the heroes we thought ourselves to be, and could think of no words to convince people of our recent glory. Friends, uninspired by our heroic tales, responded by telling us which parties we missed and how the dating landscape changed while we were away.
Life in Copper Canyon came back in sober perspective a few days later when the Houston Chronicle carried a brief story, hidden in the back pages, reporting that ten children and two Federales died in a shootout as the children moved marijuana over the Sierra Tarahumara into Sinaloa, where it was to be sold and shipped to the U.S. MORE INFO
