Our aimless wondering, however, had consumed time and gasoline and we camped for the night on the desert, many miles from any white settlement and with no sign of human habitation until, with the dark, there came to us the gleam and flicker of distant Navaho camp fires. Snugly tucked in our blankets we indulged our imaginations for awhile by fancying these were signal fires informing denizens of the desert that two lone females were lost in their midst, and experienced a few nervous qualms as to our safety and comfort. By and by, as nothing happened to justify the least uneasiness, we turned to contemplation of a canopy of midnight sky thickly studded with glorious stars, and so, soothed by a marvelous sense of peace and protection which I have since associated with desert life, we fell asleep.
--Elizabeth Forester, 1931 (letter to sister Emily)

Namita Bodaji
We will present a performance of classical Indian dance by Namita Bodaji at Rice University on Thursday, April 26. She will additionally perform at Texas A&M on Wednesday, April 25.
Stay tuned for more details and interviews.

A Few Good Volunteers
As the novelty of thousands of bikers camping in the Black Hills quickly wore off, I hiked several miles over a small mountain to get a pizza in Hot Springs, South Dakota and returned to camp wondering if I had come 1,500 miles for this. I was soon rewarded with a phenomenal display of lightning followed an hour later by a meteor shower. And later still, awakened by voices, I found an exuberant campground stirring to witness a rare southern appearance of the Aurora Borealis. Nervous, sleepless moments -- the Grizzly-sounding growl of Buffalo roaming past my tent in Yellowstone and the shrill scream of a ringtail cat -- became strangely worth my while.
We say many things are worthwhile, usually referring to great experiences and opportunities.
A teen can look at MTV for six hours and hardly notice the time that has passed. But, at some point time becomes valuable, and worthwhile experiences even more valuable. When I first moved to Houston, I was amazed at the world of diverse cultures and new possibilities before me. I wondered, what was my culture? My childhood memories consisted of Halloween, weekends at the lake, songs on the radio and my Grandmother's stories. All were things I took for granted.
Often, when we talk about culture, we are talking about the diverse activities and beliefs that we attribute to quality of life, the things that make life worthwhile. Houston Institute for Culture is looking for a few more volunteers who are inspired to do something great and worthwhile.

Gone West
More from the letters of Elizabeth Forester:
I retraced my horse's footsteps through the snow. It was a glorious world I rode through. The darkly wooded mountains and deeply colored rocks toward which I faced lent blue shadow and opalescent tints to the unbroken expanse of glistening snow which stretched before them (Navajo woman and child), and my heart lifted and sang with joy in the pure beauty which my eyes met on every hand.
As you can see we are getting ready for great adventures "on every hand" in the Western lands. We will send the last email of the spring in about a month, so if you have summer information, please send it soon. We will resume photography classes and other activities in the fall.

Our May Day
6:30pm, Monday, May 7, 2001
Board Room, City Hall, First Floor
At our May meeting, we will begin an effort to discuss and assess problems and challenges Houston cultural organizations face. We want artists, musicians and non-profit organizations to get involved in the effort to improve cultural opportunities in Houston. By examining the role of organizations that promote interest in art and culture to serve the community, as well as universities, local government and the media, we hope to find solutions to problems with participation, funding, networking, promotion and facilities for events.

A Good Design
We need good design ideas for a logo. When we cosponsor events we need to provide a logo to include in the advertising. Please let me know if you can help. We also need help producing a cultural arts magazine that is in the early planning stages.
Thanks for you time and interest,
Mark
